Music Degree Information

Students at Loyola may major in performing arts with a concentration in music, major in performing arts with a comprehensive concentration, minor in music, or take music courses as electives. Students may also participate in music activities regardless of their major or minor.

For students interested in teaching music, Loyola also offers a state-approved certificate granting program in music education. Students in this area major in music and minor in secondary education. Please contact Dr. Clay Price for further information.

Performing Arts Major, Music Concentration

Requirements for the major:

  • MU 201 - Music Fundamentals
  • MU 202 - Class Piano
  • MU 203 - The Art of Listening or MU 204 - Western Musical Traditions
  • MU 205 - Musicianship I
  • MU 206 - Musicianship II
  • MU 300 - Repertoires of Western Music
  • MU 302 - Structure of Music: Theory I
  • MU 400 - Music Writing for the Public

Two courses from the following:

  • DR/MU 210 - American Musical Theatre: Uptown and Down
  • DR 254 - Introduction to Theatre Design
  • DR 350 - Acting I

Applied Music Lessons and Ensembles:

  • Students must take a combination of MU 360 and MU 361 five times. MU 360 may only be taken once.
  • Students must take 5 ensembles.
  • Students must take an additional three credits of lessons, ensembles, or DR 375 (with permission of the department chair).

Electives:

  • Students are required to complete three additional MU 300-level or 400-level electives.

Performing Arts Major, Comprehensive Concentration

Requirements for the major:

  • DR 254 - Introduction to Theatre Design
  • DR 350 - Acting I
  • DR 375 - Evergreen Players Production
  • MU 201 - Music Fundamentals
  • MU 202 - Class Piano
  • MU 203 - The Art of Listening or MU 204 - Western Musical Traditions
  • MU 205 - Musicianship I
  • MU 206 - Musicianship II
  • MU 302 - Structure of Music: Theory I
  • DR 300-level course
  • Two MU 300-level or 400-level courses
  • One additional DR 300-level course or MU 300-level or 400-level course

One course from the following:

  • DR 301 - Improvisation
  • DR 354 - Acting II
  • DR 363 - Special Topics in Performance

One course from the following:

  • DR/MU 210 - American Musical Theatre: Uptown and Down
  • DR 250 - Introduction to Theatre History
  • DR 362 - Special Topics in Dramatic History/Literature
  • DR 370D - Queer Theatre and Film
  • MU 300-level or 400-level course

Applied Music Lessons:

  • Students must take a combination of MU 360 and MU 361 four times. MU 360 may only be taken once.

Theatre Practicum:

  • Students must complete three one-credit hours of  DR 275 - Theatre Practicum and one one-credit hour of DR 276 - Theatre Practicum Capstone. DR 276 must be taken during the senior year.

Music Minor

Requirements for the minor:

  • MU 201 - Music Fundamentals
  • MU 202 - Class Piano or MU 203 - The Art of Listening or MU 204 - Western Musical Traditions
  • MU 205 - Musicianship I
  • MU 206 - Musicianship II
  • MU 302 - Structure of Music: Theory I
  • Three MU upper-level courses (300-level or higher)

Applied Music Lessons:

  • Students must take a combination of 5.5 credits or 4 courses of MU 360 and MU 361.  MU 360 may only be taken once. 

Music Ensembles:

  • Students are required to complete 6 credits of music ensembles. 1.5 credits of ensembles may be fulfilled by participation in a musical theatre production (DR 375 - Evergreen Players Production) by permission of the department chair.
