Background

Students study at the  (AUP). The university was established in 1962 and is the oldest American university of higher education in France. AUP is an urban campus made up of multiple buildings located in the 7th arrondissement in Paris. It is located on the left bank of the Seine River, very close to many famous sites including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Hotel des Invalides.

Choosing When to Study in Paris

Program Dates-:

  • Fall: Students depart late August/early September and return to Loyola mid to late December. Students often will have a fall break late-October.
  • Spring: Students depart late January through mid May and the semester if broken up with a spring break sometime in March/April.
Academics

Registration will take place just prior to your departure; students should have multiple course options for pre-registration from the AUP course catalog, including 3-4 elective course options from the Loyola approved course equivalencies. Once accepted to a study abroad program, students will have an academic interview with the appropriate director and will be advised on their course selection.

Students should research the course pre-requisites and be prepared to demonstrate that you meet the qualifications for courses at AUP.

AUP cannot guarantee that students will receive their top course choices. 

Students enroll in four 4-credit courses and earn credit for four academic courses at Loyola plus one Free Elective course.

*All grades from abroad are transferred and calculated into your Loyola GPA; no courses can be taken as pass/fail.

Course Information

Nearly all courses are taught in English with the exception of language courses.

Housing

Students are not billed for Loyola housing. Instead, students must select from either AUP housing options or coordinate independent housing in Paris.

  • Students typically live in shared apartments and may choose to coordinate their housing either directly through  or in independent housing based on their own budget, preferences and tastes. If students select an AUP housing option, they will have AUP support in the event that any issues arise; if students choose an independent housing option, they will be responsible to work directly with their landlord or agency to resolve any issues.
  • AUP housing options vary greatly. Accepted students will be invited to a formal webinar hosted by AUP that explains the varying options that students may choose from.
  • AUP does not offer any meal plans. 
Cost

Loyola financial aid applies and students are eligible for consideration for all forms of federal, state, institutional and private sources of aid except the Federal Work Study Program. Students studying abroad for either a semester or full academic year will forfeit the value of a Federal Work-Study assignment. Students who receive GI bill funding or Veterans Benefits for tuition should reach out to SAS for additional steps in securing the ability to use these funds while abroad.

Students/parents pay to Loyola the following charges:

  • Loyola Tuition
  • Program fee

Items not included in the Loyola charges but should be budgeted for on this program (items marked with * are required for the Paris program):

  • *Meals (past students suggest budgeting $1,000- $ 2,500 per month)
  • *Shared apartment– usually includes utilities, cutlery, bedding
  • Visa fees – approximately $400
  • Cell phones and other communication expenses
  • Public transportation (Métro or subway)
  • Personal travel (hostels, hotels, airline or rail tickets, food, etc)
Insurance

Medical insurance is provided for all students during the program term by Loyola University Maryland through Chubb Insurance. This insurance coverage includes medical evacuation and repatriation, as well as 24-hour support services for medical issues. This insurance functions as a primary insurance while abroad.

Students are required to submit a copy of their U.S. health insurance card/policy. Please be sure not to cancel your US insurance policy while abroad since the provided insurances only function while on program and outside of the US.

Money and Banking

Once accepted into the program, students must call their bank and credit card carriers to tell them that they will be abroad for the semester. Students should carry debit or credit cards with them. Both Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted forms of payment, Discover and AmEx are less commonly accepted. Cash in Europe is also widely utilized.

Visa

Students will be required to obtain a student visa before going to Paris for their semester abroad. Visas cost around $400 (prices vary year to year) and will allow students to stay in France during the entirety of their program term. More information can be found in the OIP or in website.

Travel to and from Paris
  • Loyola will arrange and pay for group travel to and from Paris. Any change to the students booked itinerary is done at their own cost. Loyola does not pay for any flight deviations or tickets changes. Group flights are arranged for students traveling to Paris.
  • Flight departures are usually from Newark International Airport in New Jersey or JFK Airport in New York.
  • Students fly into one of the major Paris Airports.
Criteria for Applying

Application Requirements 

Students must submit an online application AND a Course Planning form by 11:59 pm on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving break of their sophomore year to study abroad in the fall or spring term of junior year. 

  • Attend a Study Abroad 101 information session.
  • Declare a major before applying to the study abroad program.
  • Discuss with your major advisor the possible courses you could take abroad and see if there are any potential problems, he/she sees with your plans to study abroad; Students cannot be on disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.

Criteria for Acceptance

  • Minimum cumulative CQPA average of 3.00.
  • Students who can find courses which fit their Loyola program and allow full-time participation and who are neither on disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.
  • ROTC candidates can apply as freshman to study abroad in the spring of their sophomore year. 
  • An academic interview with the program coordinator at ½ñÍíÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û is required.

In order to apply, all students must attend a Study Abroad 101 (Powerpoint) session before the application deadline. The application deadline for all Fall, Spring, and year-long opportunities during academic year 2025-26 is December 4, 2024.
